If you use Pinterest (whether you have a personal or a business account), I suppose you like to see nice Pinterest pin designs.
Pins are the most important part of the Pinterest smart feed and Pinterest itself. They represent every person, blog or business related to them.
If you click on your Pinterest home button, your smart feed will be refreshed and will add new pins for you.
How Pinterest knows which pins to show me?
Based on your recent activities, on your followings, on topics you’ve chosen when setting up a business account (or a personal), Pinterest suggests you the pins that would be in your interest.
So that is the magic if you’ve wondered how Pinterest knows what to show you in your smart feed.
Those pins that attract your attention have various elements that, combined together, work well.
Explore the Pinterest smart feed
So your first assignment for today is to go to your smart feed and just look at the pins listed there.
- What do you think about how Pinterest arranged them?
- Is there one pin that grabbed your attention?
- How does it look like?
- Which elements does it contain?
Those are the questions you need to ask yourself before you create pins for your next blog post.
Create a secret board
Now, the second thing you should do is to create a secret board where you will collect and save all the pins you like. You can name it as simple as “My favorite pin designs“. Those pins will be only for you and not for scheduling (so that is the reason why this is your secret board.)
That means, when you ran into a pin design that you consider interesting, maybe you like the colors or fonts used, or you just think the layout of the pin elements is great, save it to your secret board. Save at least 5-10 pin designs you like. That way you will always have the inspiration when needed to create your pins.
Choose 3 pin designs that you like from your secret board and create templates in Canva. Perhaps you like fonts from one pin, colors from the other pin and layout of the elements from the third one. Combine them and make your own pin. When you have a secret board full of the pin ideas, it helps you design a pin for your next blog post faster.
And if you don’t like some saved pins anymore, delete them from the board. Our taste changes, and it is OK to change the design of the pin from time to time. That way within your secret board you will only have the pins and pin designs you like.
Create a Canva account
The third assignment is to go to your Canva account (if you don’t already have it, I would recommend that you create it – it is free! 🙂 ) and create your own Pinterest pin templates according to the pin designs we talked about just a moment ago. You will have the inspiration in a secret board that you’ve collected, so now you need to decide on the elements your pins will contain.
What things do I need to define before creating a Pinterest pin?
Here are the things and elements you need to define before designing a pin.
- First, you need to have the Canva account.
- Your brand colors defined.
- Fonts you will be using. (2-3 different fonts will be enough.)
- The image that will describe the theme you were writing about in your blog post or the image that you like.
- Your logo.
- A catchy headline for your pins.
How to create a pin for Pinterest?
Now we will define the steps you need to follow so each of your pins will have all the elements included.
1. Create a layout in Canva.
There are recommendations referring to the size of a pin.
Long pins with a 2:3 ratio are recommended. The preferred size is 600×900 px. But you can create larger pins. 700×1050 px or 800×1200 px are within the “2:3 ratio rule”. If you want to create an infographic, consider using a longer layout, such as 600x1200px.
There are pre-defined templates you can use in Canva or you can just click on Custom dimensions and insert width and length of your next pin.
2. Background of the pin.
Now it is time to decide how your pin will look like. The background is an important part because it covers the entire pin. This is why your background should look nice so people would like to click on it.
Here are some variations you can apply.
Your pin’s background can be :
– colored background – it is simple to achieve. Just click on it and choose the color you want (that fits your brand).
–an image – there are so many places where you can find great images for your pins. For example Pixabay. Depending on the content, you can use images that show accessorizes (office, fashion,..), landscapes, products you are writing about,… everything you think is appropriate.
If you have some knowledge about photography, you can take your own photos and use them here. This would be a good idea if you run a food blog and publish recipes. It is better to show food that you’ve made on your pins.
TIP: If you want your image to be transparent, there is an option to do that in Canva. You just need to choose a percentage of transparency of the image.
3. A catchy headline
This is the most important thing in creating pins. You can understand a headline as a very brief description of your pin. This is a sentence that emphasizes the main idea or message of your blog post. You should make it interesting, add some words that will encourage people to click on that pin and encourage people’s curiosity. You can read more about choosing a title here.
Sometimes, depending on your niche, you just want to show an image as a pin, without headlines or text through it. And that’s possible too, so why not try it.
TIP: Use fonts and colors for the headline that fit your brand.
4. Your logo and URL
This is related to branding pins. Whether you insert a logo, your website’s URL or both, it shows people whose the pin and the content is. If you are consistent by branding your pins, people will recognize it.
5. Do you have a freebie to offer?
This is an important pin element if you have something to offer to your readers within the blog post. This is usually called CTA or call to action. So invite people to download a freebie and join your mailing list at the same time.
6. A pin description
Before you upload a pin to Pinterest, you want for every of your Pinterest pin to have a description. It has to contain long-tail keywords because it helps you with the SEO. Don’t just write down keywords, one after another. Make a sentence using keywords so it makes sense.
Keywords will help your pins to be optimized for a Pinterest search. Learn more about how to find keywords for your pin description.
TIP: At the end of the description, you can insert hashtags that will also help your pin to be found in searches.
7. Additional tip
When you finish creating a pin, you may want to try to insert a gradient over the image. Just insert it and send it behind the headline and your pin will get a new look.
Consider using a gradient feature in Canva for one of your pins. This way your image or a headline can stand out. If the gradient is darker, you can set white fonts on it. If you put a colored gradient over an image, it can stand out. So you can reuse the same image again and it will look different on the other pin you create.
That’s it. Now you’ve learned the important things about creating a Pinterest pin.
If you have your favorite element that you include in your pin design, share it in the comments below.
If you like the post, pin it or save it for later.
I’ll appreciate it. 🙂
